How to buy & own a suppressor in Pennsylvania

YES! SUPPRESSORS ARE LEGAL in PA!

How do you buy a suppressor?

Step 1

Choose the suppressor for your application.

Visit SilencerShop or Griffin Armament to find the best suppressor for your needs! If you need help, give us a call and we will help you choose!

Step 2

Place the order with HVT and pay in full. If the suppressor is in stock at our location, skip to step 4.

Step 3

Wait 6-12 business days for the ATF to approve the shipping of the suppressor, another 5-7 days for shipping.

Step 4

Sign up for ATF eForms so we can complete your eForm 4 (transfer of an NFA item). We will electronically capture your fingerprints and help you pay your $200 Tax Stamp.

Step 5

Once the eForm4 has been submitted, you must wait anywhere between 3 and 250 days for the ATF to process your submission.

Average approval time (as of 3/28/25)
Individual Eform 4: 5 days

Trust Eform 4: 10 days

Step 6

You will receive an email from the ATF stating that your eForm 4 has been approved. At this time you simply come to our location, fill out a 4473 and take your suppressor home!

Suppressor FAq's

Q: Do I need to buy a suppressor for every gun I want to suppress?

A: We would love it if you did! But no, thats not necessary. Many suppressor manufactures design their suppressors to be fired on a variety of firearms.

Q: Can I hunt with a suppressor?

A: In the great commonwealth of Pennsylvania, it is legal to hunt with a suppressor. Just imagine how nice it would be to keep your hearing after hunting season.

Q: Are suppressers really as quiet as they seem?

A: Yes and no. some calibers and specific ammunition can be very quiet. However, no suppressor will stop the supersonic crack of a 5.56. Remember, we are suppressing the firearm, not silencing it.

Q: Should I file my suppressor as a trust or an individual?

A: In our opinion, there is only one reason to file your suppressor as a trust: if you are looking to have family members take possession of your suppressor when you are not around. In the case of a suppressor owner's death, the suppressor can be transferred for FREE via an ATF form 5. Many people disagree with our sentiment, but they are also the ones selling the trusts... Remember: we are not lawyers! Do not take this as legal advice. If you are looking to file your suppressor as a trust, we recommend the trusts sold by our partners at Silencer Shop

Q: Is the tax stamp a yearly fee to own a suppressor?

A: No, the tax stamp is a one time transfer fee for the suppressor. Once you own the suppressor there are no additional fees!
